Things We Need to Know About Math

Whether we like it or not, math will always be a part of our lives. We encounter math when we buy from the groceries, sell goods, travel through vehicle, report company progress, count savings, and many more. That is why it is really important for us to study math. In this article, we are going to tell you why we should study math and we are also going to talk about how math is involved in our daily lives.

ESPEN ANDERSEN will then tell us why we should choose math in high school.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE MATH IN HIGH SCHOOL

A recurring problem in most rich societies is that students in general do not take enough math – despite high availability of relatively well-paid jobs in fields that demand math, such as engineering, statistics, teaching and technology. Students see math as hard, boring and irrelevant, and do not respond (at least not sufficiently) to motivational factors such as easier admission to higher education or interesting and important work.

It seems to me we need to be much more direct in our attempts to get students to learn hard sciences in general and math in particular. Hence, addressed to current and future high school students, here are 12 reasons to choose lots of math in high school:

Choose math because it makes you smarter. Math is to learning what endurance and strength training is to sports: the basis that enables you to excel in the specialty of your choice. You cannot become a major sports star without being strong and having good cardiovascular ability. You cannot become a star within your job or excel in your profession unless you can think smart and critically — and math will help you do that. Read more here.

There are 12 reasons given and one that is really a good reason is that we should choose math because we are going to meet it more and more in the future. It is true that math will always be a part of life and in many things that we do that is why as early as high school, we should already choose math. Next up, Math Worksheets Center will share to us ten ways we could use math every day.

10 Ways We Use Math Everyday

Math is a part of our lives, whether we clean the house, make supper or mow the lawn. Wherever you go, whatever you do, you are using math daily without even realizing it. It just comes naturally.

Chatting on the cell phone

Chatting on the cell phone is the way of communicating for most people nowadays. It’s easy, accessible and cost effective. Every one has a cell phone and it requires a basic knowledge of skill and math. You need to know numbers and how they work, and with today’s technology  you can do basically everything on your cell phone, from talking and faxing to surfing the Internet.

In the kitchen

Baking and cooking requires some mathematical skill as well. Every ingredient has to be measured and sometimes you need to multiply or divide to get the exact amount you need. Whatever you do in the kitchen requires math. Even just using the stove is basic math skills in action. Read more here.

So just like what I said earlier, math is everywhere. One common activity where we use math is cooking. We use math for measuring ingredients and for timing cooking time as well. The ones provided above are not just the activities where we use math because there are a lot more. In addition to that, Amelia Teng will now tell us how we solve real-life problems with math.

Solving real-life problems with maths

Last month, Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) student Marsha Shahrin and some friends played around with dishwashing liquid and water to create bubbles. “Our aim was to create the most number of bubbles with the least number of tries,” said the 16-year-old.

The activity was part of a series of year-end modules that the school introduced to Secondary 4 students four years ago. Students learn how to collect empirical data for analysis using data loggers – devices that record data – and use software to create virtual models, for instance.

Some schools are adopting such methods – known as mathematical modelling – in efforts to help students see the power of maths in solving real-life problems.

This includes deciding how to maximise one’s wealth with a $300,000 prize or coming up with the best location on an island for a ferry terminal for tourists.

A new online resource – www.mathmodelling.sg – launched in September by a National Institute of Education (NIE) professor will give teachers greater support in teaching and learning resources. Read more here.

Through learning math, students are also able to learn and acquire different skills that they will surely and eventually use for the future and for real life situations that they are going to face. Math may really be difficult but being knowledgeable about it would be an edge. As we said, math is all around us. That is why knowing and understanding more about math would be of your advantage.

How Can Businesses Benefit From Pedestrian Traffic Sensors?

The market out there has become extremely competitive in the last few years. With globalisation, small businesses now have to compete with larger brands for the same customers, adding to the difficulty of running a business lucratively. With managing a business getting increasingly difficult, there is hardly any room for error in business decisions.
Fortunately, technology has come up with numerous ways to assist businesses in making better business decisions. One of the technological products which are helping businesses a lot currently are the pedestrian traffic sensors. Deploying the pedestrian traffic counters or sensors at strategic locations in brick and mortar stores, enable businesses to monitor what the people are interested in most at different times of the year. Numerous businesses have already seen benefits of leveraging pedestrian data to design the layouts of shops for maximum profitability.

If you are a city planner or a traffic company and are looking for a traffic counter, you should consider Traffic Count System ATT Systems. This system tracks both vehicles and human traffic, provides real time statistics, and can be portable or fixed. If you are looking for such a solution, you should check out ATT Systems site above.

In this article we shall discuss, how can businesses benefit from pedestrian traffic sensors.

Personnel management
Businesses will be in a better position to place personnel at places where they are most required, when they leverage the data provided by pedestrian traffic sensors. Many a time, businesses lose prospective clients because of the fact that there were no staffs around them, to help clear their doubts about the products that they were interested to buy. When businesses employ pedestrian traffic sensors properly, they will be able to utilise the space of the store far more efficiently. Better managed stores will obviously run more profitably, as they offer better customer satisfaction than rest of the competition.

Better energy utilisation
In order to run the stores profitably, it is imperative that energy is used as judiciously as possible. Surprisingly, most businesses are yet to realise that savings in electricity can boost profits dramatically. Employing pedestrian traffic sensors enable businesses to use electricity judiciously without having to compromise on customer satisfaction. Most stores spend a lot of money on lighting, heating or air conditioning, to make the experience of shopping for clients as pleasant as possible. Pedestrian traffic sensor ensures that businesses do not waste money while doing so. Being energy efficient is a definite plus for businesses.

Better maintenance
Businesses will inadvertently have to keep doing maintenance works on their premises periodically, to keep the store clean and safe. It is imperative that these maintenance works are carried out during periods when clients’ traffic is minimal in stores. Pedestrian traffic sensors help businesses in making these decisions so that they can carry out all their maintenance
work, such that the disturbance caused to their prospective clients are as low as possible.

What is Physics?

When we hear the word physics, what usually comes to mind? Well according to physics.org, the dictionary definition of physics is “the study of matter, energy, and the interaction between them”. In this article, we are going to explain that further as we tell you more information about physics and how it works. Read along as we discover more about the wonders of physics and what it does.

If you are looking for a Physics tuition centre for O’ Levels, you can try Advo Education O level Physics tuition that offers quality Physics tuition. They feature ex-MOE teachers and have a wealth of prior teaching experience. If you need help for Physics urgently, they also have subject-focused intensive courses to help you improve quickly and effectively. If you are serious about improving your grades, you should check out their site immediately.

In an article by Garden City High School, let us read how physics provides the foundation for all natural sciences.

Physics provides the foundation for all natural sciences

Physics explains the fundamental laws of the universe and introduces important concepts that are essential for advanced study of chemistry, biology and all other branches of science.

Physics is essential for understanding chemistry. Without physics students cannot  understand  major chemical principles, for example

  • The chemical bond
  • Gas Laws
  • Molecular collisions
  • Electrochemical concepts
  • Thermodynamics
  • KE and PE Energy
  • pH

Physics and chemistry are essential for understanding biology. Without physics and chemistry students cannot understand major biology principles, for example. Read more here.

So according to the article above, physics is necessary for understanding chemistry biology, and some of the other branches of science. That is why Physics, along with chemistry, is considered as a central science. Now, Anne Helmenstine will share to us the basics of physics in scientific study.

The Basics of Physics in Scientific Study

Physics is a systematic study of the natural world, particularly the interaction between matter and energy. It is a discipline that attempts to quantify reality through a precise application of observation coupled with logic and reason.

In order to make use of such a discipline, you must first understand certain fundamentals. Only by learning the basics of physics can you build upon it and dive deeper into this field of science.

Whether you are pursuing a career in physics or merely interested in its findings, it certainly is fascinating to learn about.

An Introduction to Physics

To begin the study of physics, you must first understand what physics actually means. Understanding what falls within the realm of physics—and what does not—helps focus the field of study so you can formulate meaningful physics questions.

Behind every question in physics lies four very important terms you will want to understand: hypothesis, model, theory and law. Read more here.

So above, we have provided you with an introduction to physics, the fundamental laws of physics like the 3 laws of motion, tools used in physics like superconductors, and history’s famous physicists like Sir Isaac Newton. In addition to that, Andrew Zimmerman Jones will tell us how physics work in his article below.

How Physics Works

Physics is the scientific study of matter and energy and how they interact with each other. This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, radiation, gravity — just about anything, honestly. Physics deals with matter on scales ranging from sub-atomic particles (i.e. the particles that make up the atom and the particles that make up those particles) to stars and even entire galaxies.

How Physics Works

As an experimental science, physics utilizes the scientific method to formulate and test hypotheses that are based on observation of the natural world.

The goal of physics is to use the results of these experiments to formulate scientific laws, usually expressed in the language of mathematics, which can then be used to predict other phenomena.

When you talk about theoretical physics, you are speaking of the area of physics that is focused on developing these laws, and using them to extrapolate into new predictions. These predictions from theoretical physicists then create new questions that experimental physicists then develop experiments to test. Read more here.

The role of physics in other fields was discussed and the different fields of study were enumerated and they were: electronics, quantum physics, astronomy, and biophysics. These are all important for us. For example, electronics is what we need every day because we use electricity every day. Physics is a broad science and it really has something to do with a lot of things within us and around us.
