Courage for Great Justice | By Skye

John Courage is cool.

Check out this action page about genocide in Darfur. I got it in an email from the campaign a little while ago. I can use it to send my thoughts on the subject to my Senators and U.S. Reps as well as my local newspaper. There are guidelines for responses: "appropriately respectful and in acceptable taste." (Burnt Orange also mentioned it a while back.)

It took some work to build this, and it took some work to fill out the content. It's like they understand the goal of electing good people, which is to create and sustain good policy. So while they're maintaining the communications infrastructure for the campaign, they may as well use it for working on policy too.

Good show, y'all. Now send me a dang logo so I can put it on my website!

American religion and the two party state | By Shane

Two links too important to neglect. First, the brilliant Michael Pollak explains the unique character of American religion, specifically how it differs from the European variety and the profound impact of individual choice. Second, a piece on where we find ourselves today, with broad, first draft suggestions of what is to be done. (Please note that he is responding in a forum where a militant secularism is FAR more pronounced than it is in American politics more broadly. Especially Texas. Also, he is writing from New York.)

For more background, he gives a brief potted-history of "fundamentalism," by way of Karen Armstrong, in an older post.

Brooks on Roe v. Wade | By GlennM

David Brooks editorial on Roe v. Wade took me by surprise. He argues that by stifling debate by handling the issue in the courts instead of the legislature, we've been building up pressure in very unhealthy ways. As seen by the recent "nuclear option" over judicial nominations.
